Why You Need This

Your Google Voice Number Powers the Automation

Your Google Voice number is a free business phone number that sits in front of your personal cell phone. When a customer calls your Google Voice number, the call rings through to your cell. You answer it the same way you always do.

But here is what happens behind the scenes: when a call goes unanswered, Google Voice sends an email alert to your Gmail. That email is what Uptick Co.'s system reads to trigger an automatic text back to the customer, within seconds of the missed call.

That automatic text is the first system we build for you. It recovers leads you are currently losing every day. Without Google Voice, that system cannot work.

IMPORTANT: Your Google Voice number will become your business phone number. After setup, you will update your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, and any other listings to show your new GV number. Do not skip this step: we cover it at the end of this guide.

Step 1

Go to Google Voice

On your computer, open a browser and go to voice.google.com. Sign in with your Gmail account when prompted.

  1. Open a browser on your computer (Chrome recommended)
  2. Type voice.google.com in the address bar and press Enter
  3. Click Sign in and choose your Gmail account
  4. You will be taken to the setup screen

Step 2

Click "For Personal Use"

After you sign in, Google Voice will ask you to choose between For Personal Use and For Work. Choose For Personal Use. This gives you a free number. The work version requires a paid Google Workspace subscription: you do not need that.

  1. A screen appears asking how you will use Google Voice
  2. Two options are shown: "For Personal Use" on the left and "For Work" on the right
  3. Click "For Personal Use"
  4. If prompted to choose a device type, select "Web"
  5. You are taken to the number search screen

Step 3

Search for Your Number

Google Voice lets you pick your own number. Type your city name or area code in the search box. For Houston, use 713, 281, 832, or 346.

TIP: Do not rush the number selection. This becomes your permanent business number. Take a minute to find one you like. You can search multiple area codes to find better options.

Here are patterns that work well for a service business:

PatternExampleWhy It Works
Repeating digits(713) 444-5555Easy to remember, looks professional
Sequential numbers(832) 123-4567Customers notice the pattern
Matching pairs(346) 221-3344Two pairs are easier to recall
Catchy endings(281) 500-12121212 at the end sticks in memory
Round numbers(713) 800-1000Clean and business-like

When you find a number you like, click Select next to it.

Step 4

Verify Your Cell Phone Number

Google will ask you to link your cell phone number. This is how calls to your GV number get forwarded to your cell. Customers will only ever see your GV number, not your personal cell.

  1. Type your cell phone number including area code, no dashes (example: 7135551234)
  2. Click "Send code"
  3. Within seconds a 6-digit code arrives as a text to your cell phone
  4. Type the 6-digit code into the box on screen
  5. Click "Verify"
  6. A confirmation screen shows your new Google Voice number: click "Claim" then "Finish"
TIP: If Google says your number cannot be used, it means that cell number was already used to create a GV account. Try a different number just for the verification step. You can remove the linked number afterward.

Step 5

Turn On Email Alerts for Missed Calls

This is the most important setup step. This is what allows Uptick Co.'s system to detect your missed calls and fire the automatic text-back.

IMPORTANT: If these email alerts are turned off, the missed call automation will not work. Double-check that all three are turned on before your build session.
  1. At the top right of Google Voice, click the gear icon (Settings)
  2. On the left side menu, click "Calls"
  3. Find "Get email alerts for missed calls" and turn it ON
  4. On the left side menu, click "Messages"
  5. Find "Forward messages to email" and turn it ON
  6. On the left side menu, click "Voicemail"
  7. Find "Get voicemail via email" and turn it ON

Step 6

Download the Google Voice App on Your Phone

Now that your number is set up on the computer, download the Google Voice app on your phone so you can make and receive calls from your GV number on the go.

  1. iPhone: Open the App Store and search "Google Voice". Download and sign in with your Gmail.
  2. Android: Open the Play Store and search "Google Voice". Download and sign in with your Gmail.
  3. Open the app and tap "Sign in with Google"
  4. Choose your Gmail account
  5. The home screen opens: your GV number shows at the top
  6. Setup is complete

Step 7

Update Your Business Listings

Your Google Voice number is now your official business phone number. Update every place your old number appears. Your automation only works on calls that come through your Google Voice number.

PlatformWhere to Update It
Google Business Profilebusiness.google.com → Info → Phone
YelpYelp for Business → Business Information → Phone
Facebook PageFacebook → Edit Page → Contact Info
Your WebsiteUpdate the phone number on your website or contact page
Angi / HomeAdvisorYour profile settings on each platform
Any other directoriesAnywhere your old number appears online
TIP: Your old cell number still works fine for personal calls. You are not changing your cell number. You are just adding a new business number on top of it. Customers call your GV number. It rings your cell.

Step 8

Keep Your Number Active

Google Voice will cancel your number if it goes unused for 30 days. To keep it active, you just need to make or receive one call or send one text per month through the GV app.

Once Uptick Co. has your automation set up, your system will be sending texts automatically through your number every time a call is missed. That activity keeps the number active with zero effort from you.

IMPORTANT: Do not go more than 30 days without any activity on your Google Voice number or you will lose it. Once our automation is live, this is handled automatically.

You Are Ready

What Happens Next

Once your Google Voice number is set up and your business listings are updated, you are ready for your Uptick Co. build session.

In your build session, Uptick Co. will:

  • Connect your Google Voice email alerts to the automation system
  • Set up the automatic text-back to every missed caller
  • Build the Google Sheet that logs every missed call and follow-up
  • Test the full system end to end before we go live

After the session, the system runs on its own. A customer calls, you are on the job, the call goes unanswered. Within seconds, they get a text from your business number. You recover the lead.
